Contract Summary
Abbot of the Bell seeks capable hunters. Haunting Revenant has turned Forest into a danger zone. Recover what was taken Reward promised: 430 gp paid by frightened caretakers who need the dead to stay buried this time.
Target Monster
Name: Haunting Revenant
Type: Undead
CR: 10
Legendary: No
A haunting revenant is an undead manifestation bound to a place and a grievance, a territorial horror that possesses and animates structures such as houses, cabins, towers, mills, ruins, churches, manors, gates, and other buildings. Rather than appearing as only a simple ghost, it is best imagined as a haunted structure made alive: doors become grasping limbs, windows resemble watchful eyes, beams twist like bones, stairways coil like spines, and whole buildings move or attack as if the place itself has become the revenant.
Mission Frame
Employer: Abbot of the Bell
Objective: Recover what was taken
Secondary Pressure: Time matters. The danger around Forest will worsen if the party delays.
Escalation: The stolen relic or target prize will be moved deeper into danger if the party waits.
Hook and Signs
Hook: A map recovered from a dead traveler shows every route through Forest, except one location where the ink has been violently scraped away.
Signs of the monster:
- Shadows in the area stretch and gather too early, pooling where the threat is expected to appear.
- Fresh tracks slowly fill with dark water or ink even in dry ground.
- Metal chimes, bells, or chains sound faintly when no one is nearby to move them.
Twist: Local people have secretly been feeding or appeasing Haunting Revenant to keep it from targeting something worse.
Rewards
Primary Reward: 430 gp paid by frightened caretakers who need the dead to stay buried this time.
Secondary Reward: Relic reward: Ashen Wake Charm
Ashen Wake Charm
Form: charm
A small pouch of grave ash bound in black thread and wax.
Minor Effect: Once per long rest, the bearer gains advantage on one check to track or identify undead activity.
